Science 10 WebQuest
Nuclear chemistry is the most powerful and misunderstood topic in chemistry. The mention of the word nuclear puts most people in fear and their first and sometimes only picture is that of a nuclear explosion. What comes first to your mind when the term nuclear chemistry is brought up? Are the bomb, nuclear power and radiation poisoning the only things nuclear chemistry has to offer? In this quest you will find the answers to these questions and learn a tremendous amount about nuclear chemistry. You are Science reporters for the Claremont Secondary School Newspaper. As there can be a threat of making more Nuclear Weaponry, you must try to explain, to your peers, what this means. It is your job to describe what nuclear chemistry is, including weapons used, and the effects of radiation, given off by these weapons, on the environment and its people. Also include any POSITIVE effects radiation may have. You will have to create a Newsletter on the topic of Nuclear Chemistry. 1. Scientifically define and describe the topic 2. Gather evidence for the topic 3. Identify any subtopics 4. Include and explain the effects of Nuclear Chemistry Before you create your newsletter, you must research your topic. Follow the links below and answer questions on a separate piece of paper. All answers are to be handed in.
You must create a newsletter that will be distributed to the entire school during an emergency meeting. This newsletter must explain all the aspects of nuclear chemistry. Include your opinion about whether or not all nuclear weapons should be destroyed. Objective: The objective of this project is to have students use technology to research and learn about many aspects of nuclear chemistry. This project will allow students to learn about the scientific discoveries and reactions regarding nuclear chemistry, the effects of nuclear weaponry on the environment and population, and voice their opinions about ridding the world of nuclear weapons once and for all. 1. Students may work in pairs to answer the research questions and create their newsletter. 2. Each group will create a one-page newsletter that will be distributed to the entire school during an emergency meeting. 3. The newsletter should be used as a forum to create solutions to prevent nuclear war. 4. The newsletter must include all aspects of nuclear chemistry (use answers to questions). 5. Include, in the newsletter, your opinion about whether or not all nuclear weapons should be destroyed and the effects of radiation (use Chernobyl as an example). 6. References MUST be included. Give credit where credit is due. (4 points) You will be graded according to the following rubric.
